Scandinavian Fairy Folk, The Gnome

Gnomes originate from Scandinavia. Around 1,500 years ago, they migrated throughout the old World. Since that time, Gnomes have been seen in England, Russia, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Hungary, Iceland, Poland, Yugoslavia and their favourite Scotland. Most of the Gnome lore known today comes from Scotland.

The Banshee, Harbinger of Death

The Banshee is a harbinger of death. She is one of the most feared of all fairies. When her keen cuts through the night all know that someone is going to die. The Banshee herself is not the cause of the death just the herald, never the less people still blamed her. Originally she was an ancestral fairy connected to certain old Irish families. It was her destiny to warn them whenever one of the family was about to die. Time passed, and she became the "Washer of the shrouds" or the "Washer of the banks". An old hag that washed the bloody clothes of the next to die, along the banks of the river at night and who wailed when death was near. To see the Banshee means your death is close by.

Imp - Fairy or Demon?

The mischievous Imp appears frequently in folklore and superstition. It is widely disputed about what an Imp actually is. Some believe he is a fairy folk, possibly a subclass of brownie, where others see him as a lesser demon. He is Germanic in origin and demons in their legends are not like the ones we envision today. They were not minions of the nether realms, all evil and brimstone smelling. They were mischievous and trouble making but not malevolent. They were occasionally seen as helpers to the Gods.
